Pro and Contra of Waldorf school education

Waldorf school education: Pro and ContraA neighbor family, both medicine doctors having a daughter, visited us once told about they are thinking about which school is to choose fo their daughter. We said we have some friends, whose children on Waldorf schools and who also know some things about this kind of children education, so that they would be glad to share their knowledge. Further are some meanings about Waldorf education:

Contra
It is at our Waldorf school that very well-paying or very well-known parents are seen as "customers" rather than "usual middle class parents" ... And there is not even an equal treatment of the pupils.

Contra
For me Waldorf school means that the children learn completely different as on a state school and on learning they need for many substantial things, like reading, comparatively longer. The final result, however, is the same. On the other side in our regular schools a lot of lessons are cancelled due to personal shortcomings.

Pro
At a Waldorf school you have - like (almost) every private school an elite education, which is (usually) an advantage for your child. It will only be with children in a class whose parents are already (much) spending money on the child, taking an active part in school life and thinking about the child = it starts off much easier in school life another school life. The type of children, who is practically "sand in the gear" at the state school (learns nothing, no homework, cheeky, parents completely disinterested) is practically not present at Waldorf schools.

Contra
My two cousins learn at a Waldorf school. The same problem from the beginning - at the Waldorf school thing run much slower, with much less pressure. But the kids react extremely, if they get pressure after the Waldorf school - children just haven't learn to handle pressure.

Pro
Many things are beautiful at Waldorf schools - the holistic approach, agriculture, music, the maintenance of childhood and it would be good for the regular school if there was something more of it there. The child has a wide range of non-academic things too, can try out many them with own hands.

Contra
The son of a friend is in a Waldorf school, now 3rd class. He still writes with colored pencils and without lines...:(

Pro
At Waldorf school your child has for now no pressure, as it is often built up in primary schools (especially from the third class up), does not get "bad" grades - they are bad for a child, especially when it has tried hard, but has "failed".

Contra
The best girlfriend of my daughter has changed from the state primary school to the Waldorfschule - quite honestly it always frightens me, what educational gap the two now have (both now 8th class), and this since the third class. What the girl is doing now in the 7th and 8th class my daughter has already passed through in the state regulary school in grades 5 and 6. There would be no "way back into the state system" (without extreme losses) possible.

Pro
The buildings are often very attractive (our Waldorf school is located in a flower meadow completely idyllic at the edge of the forest), the classrooms are beautiful, new, renovated (when I think of the schoolyard of our children ... and how many actions took place at the school , Until it could be renovated ... ). At our Waldorf school, there are also livestock (goats, chickens, bees ...) and the children have to take care of this, for example, the goat's milk also goes to cheese and learn many "practical" things. There is also a beautiful herb garden.

Contra
My daughter's girlfriend was totally under-challenged after the end of class 2 in the regular school at Waldorf for a half year - she was simply much further, and that although she is a normal child. It is, for example, the case that the state education plan foresees that children at the end of the 2nd class should also read texts fluently, which they never read befor. The Waldorf School provides reading in the main focus for class 3.

Pro
At Waldorf school your child has unselective access to things that would not be possible at the state school with the appropriate education (main school): everyone learns French, everyone plays a classical instrument, the child does not receive these feedbacks with 9 or 10 ... " No, you're too stupid for the higher education! ".

Contra
Waldorf makes many nice things (clays, horticulture, beehive, ...) no question. But the academic is too short.

Pro
It is very important and i think it is very good: at Waldorf school they try to eat healthy food and to curb the brand craze.

Contra
Waldorf schools have a kind of esoteric touch for my taste. I do not know whether the children should really be believed to be fairies, etc. - that has for me always the touch of a parallel world. The childhood today is very "disenchanted" and some childhood would surely do them good - but with fairies, dwarves, etc. I personally find strange and also somewhat untimely. Especially if the children really ask critically that this parallel world really exists.

Pro
The same teacher accompanies the children as an important reference person the complete schooling time.

Contra
Media education should also not take place in such a way that there should be no TV consumption or computer - as is often the case with so called media free Waldorf school education. We live in a visual media society - since the responsible interaction should be taught.

Pro
Since you are part of a Waldorf parent network, there is no moment "oh God, if I had known that" ... you always informed at best.

Contra
The girlfriend of my daughter at the Waldorf school does not have a single book ... this is an unclear loose collection of notes in every subject with countless copies...

You see, there are many different meanings: some are very pro, some are... not for everybody. If you should too take such decision "Waldorf school for my child - yes or no?" - the only advice could be "first inform, then act". you and your child must suit each other with Waldorf school, their teachers and the whole Waldorf education philosophy, because Waldorf schools do not simply teach an alternative educational concept, but a complete lifestyle.
